THE EFFECT OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE

 

ABSTRACT

The study critically analyses the effect of examination malpractice on academic performance of senior secondary school students in some selected secondary schools a case study of Badagry local government area of Lagos state. The issue of examination malpractices has become a major problem that many researchers has carries out studies on its causes and effect on students in different part of the world though none of the researches was conducted in Lagos State. To further lend a helping hand to surmount this problem is the examination of its causes and effect as a way of identifying the solution; hence this study the major objectives of the paper are: To examine the causes of examination malpractice among the SS3 students of secondary schools in Badagry Local Government of Lagos State,  To examine the effects of examination malpractice among the SS3 students of secondary schools in Badagry Local Government of Lagos State, To identify the solutions to the issues of examination malpractice among the SS3 students of secondary schools in Badagry Local Government of Lagos State. Concerning methodology, both secondary and primary sources of data was used for the study. A descriptive research design was used with a sample size of 60 respondents from the entire SS3 students of secondary school in Badagry Local Government area of Lagos State. Data was analyzed using correlation statistical tools. Key findings from the study showed that examination malpractices have significant effect on the academic performance of secondary school students in Badagry local government. Family background, fear of failure and peer group is one among the factors affecting examination malpractices in most secondary schools. Recommendations for the study include; the schools management should urge the state and the federal government of Nigeria toward development and provision of infrastructure in the school environment.
